How to Adjust When Your Castability Changes

If you plan on acting for longer than a couple of years, you’re bound to find that your castability will evolve as you do.

Perhaps you were an ingenue, but after a couple of decades of acting, you just don’t fit into that category any more. Maybe you’ve lost a lot of weight and you look different. Maybe you just feel like you’ve evolved as a person and want to pursue different roles than what you’ve booked in the past.

So, how can you market yourself effectively when you think your type has changed?

Watch this week’s Acting Business Bite to find out.

Can you think of any fun marketing ideas to share your change in castability? If so, be sure to share them in the comment box below.

  1. Thank you for the great advice Dallas! Loved the cameo appearance by Cowboy half way through the video.

  2. Now that I am in my mid-twenties, I am transitioning out of playing teen roles. I was curious how others perceive my “type”, so I made a survey, and sent it out to people I trust(both industry people and non-industry).

I asked questions from everything about style of filmmaking they could see me aligned with, to type of TV role(naming actual existing series reg roles), to hair color preference. It was enlightening to get their perspective.

  3. Thanks, Dallas! This topic is incredibly timely for me. I’ve dropped a lot of weight (and intend to drop more) and have been mulling how to handle (demo reels, castability, new headshots, etc.) I feel validated by your insight that I must bring people into the fold about my transition and being present to my castability changing.

  4. This is wonderful, I went grey, yep, grey wig because my hair is damaged. But I have head shots that say this is me, scarfs, and two grey styles. I’m still having fun. Thanks for all your help

  6. Thank you for this. As I’m aging I can no longer fit those teenage roles. I totally needed feed back. I asked my acting class what they thought I could play and I got a nice ten year range. The next step after that was wrapping my head around putting myself out there for the “new” type. But it’s like a whole new world of characters opened up that I never noticed before.
