The Art of the Drop-off

A drop-off is as simple as hand delivering your headshot to your target casting directors’ or agents’ offices. Some people love it, some people dread it. There is an art to the drop-off, and it’s all about being easy, breezy.

Watch this week’s Acting Business Bite to find out the RIGHT and the WRONG way to do a drop-off.

What happened the last time you made your drop-offs? How did you feel walking in the room? What does your packaging look like? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. I was contemplating my first drop off yesterday!

    1. I was totally psyched out.
    2. Going to the casting director’s office meant I would probably be late for my evening plans at The Living Gallery.

So…I overnight fed-exed it! I figured it’s a way to stand out as it is addressed directly to the casting director and says “extremely urgent” on it. :)

I was excited and amused to find this in my email this morning.

The email I’m referring to is Dallas’s drop off video- seemed serendipitous.

BUT, UPDATE: The fed ex worked! I am auditioning tomorrow for the role I submitted for :)

  2. Did droppoffs yesterday in Santa Monica. Not only is it a good way to market yourself as Dallas says, but you find out where the offices are and get comfortable in the space so that when you do get an audition its not a new, out of your element, experience. And you have the opportunity to see who the assistants etc are.

I drop a manila envelope with name and address. Drop in box that 50% have or politely ask if I can leave it with assistant or whoever else is at front desk. Studios are tricky, some have mail rooms, but its trial and error.

I have had good experiences overall and never been treated poorly. Good Luck!

  4. I did drop-offs when I was in LA, but I’m not so sure about doing it in smaller markets. I live in the Phoenix area and have met a great deal of local industry people. Anyhow, I’m glad I followed nearly all the guidelines that Dallas mentioned. Be aware that some offices and many production lots like Paramount will not let you drop off anything. And there are a few that will only accept them in the mailroom. However, I still think it’s a good idea for the many places that do.
